What's Going On in US Politics Today?

The US is a military powerhouse, they are a well developed country, and it's a place where many people like to be. Therefore their political affairs are very important to the world on a global scale, and they're definitely worth paying attention to. Today in US politics there are many things that are going on, and it's important we pay attention to them because many things in the world revolve around the US and the US is probably the most powerful country in the world.

Currently in US politics we are approaching the middle of President Trump's term, and many other things are going on as well. Judge Kavanaugh is also close to becoming the 9th judge on the Supreme Court however is currently facing sexual assault allegations. There is currently a trial that is going that will determine whether or not he is approved by congress and fulfils that 9th position on the Supreme court. If Judge Kavanaugh becomes the 9th member of the Supreme Court, he could tilt the balance of power to the the right side for almost a generation which would be hugely significant in passing new laws. This could motivate people going into the polls with many people furious over the fact that a man accused of sexual assault might sit on the highest court in the country.

Another big issue in US politics that has taken place over that past few months is immigration. Because of Trumps immigration policy, a lot of people are outraged with what has been happening to immigrants. Many families have been separated at the border with kids being legal citizens and their parents being illegal. This has sparked controversy across democrats and republicans with many people feeling that it is unethical with what is going on, and sparking chants of "abolish ICE" (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). This could cause a lot of people to go vote as well after some of the horrific images of families being separated and young kids being taken away from their parents.

Another topic that has been under a lot of debate over the last few months is the 2nd amendment debate. After the Parkland shooting in Florida in February, student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School sparked a huge walk-out movement, protesting the 2nd amendment and the dangers that kids shouldn't have to feel when they're at school. They even spoke to the NRA spokesperson and Governor Marco Rubio arguing about how something needs to be done and said "enough is enough". With many kids recently becoming legal to vote, and outraged parents worrying for their kids safety, this could hugely encourage a larger voter turnout to hopefully try and bring change to the gun laws in America.

In other news, many people are protesting Trump's Affordable Clean Energy proposal. Since Trump has been in office, he has received a lot of criticism for his environmental policies. Notably, by opting out of the Paris Agreement. Many environmentalists have been furious with Trump and this could encourage a lot of people to go out and vote this voting season in an attempt to try and help the environment.

Finally, there have been mixed reactions to Trump's plan to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium from Canada, Mexico, and the European Union. Many people, including politicians have expressed their disapproval with the decision for example House Speaker Paul Ryan saying, "I disagree with this decision, there are better ways to help American workers and consumers." Because of the controversy with many people feeling different ways, this could provoke a larger voter turnout on both sides for those for tariffs and for those against it.

In conclusion, this voting season there are many hot topics that could definitely increase the number of people that go out and vote. Many people are eager to try and make a difference with the numerous controversial events that have sparked many decisions over the last year. It will be interesting to see how it plays out and it's important that people pay attention because the US has a big influence over many things that go on in this world. Therefore their policies can largely effect the entire world, and citizens of all countries.
