The women's US Open final open is out. On September 7 Victoria Azarenka defeated Flavia Penneta 6-4 6-2. This was Penneta's maiden Grand Slam Semi-Final. Although Penneta played well, Azarenka was just too good. Azarenka moves into her second US Open final in a row after she lost to Serena Williams in the final of 2012.
Also, Serena Williams defeated Li Na of China 6-0 6-3. Li Na is the first Chinese player to reach the semi-finals of the US Open. But despite the Chinese player's good for Williams was just too good for her. Williams will now have a shot at her fifth US Open title.
The men's semi-finals draw is out. On Thursday Richard Gasquet defeated David Ferrer 6-3 6-1 4-6
2-6 6-3. Gasquet in the first two sets produced an array of spectacular shots. But Ferrer, who has come back 5 times in his career from 2 sets down almost looked like making it 6 times after he won the third and fourth set. But Gasquet in the end was too good for Ferrer and one break was all he needed to wrap up the final set 6-3. Despite Gasquet committing 49 unforced errors and Ferrer with 45 Gasquet still converted 52 winners against Ferrer's 40.
Also on Sunday, Rafael Nadal overcame Tommy Robredo in straight sets 6-0 6-2 6-2. Robredo, who stunned Flushing Meadows after he beat Federer in straight sets just couldn't continue his feat. Robredo committed 21 unforced errors while Nadal made 15. On the other hand, Robredo made just ten winners while Nadal made twenty eight. Nadal clearly dominated.
But the biggest upset of the tournament so far has been engineered my Stanislas Wawrinka. The swiss overcame defending champion Andy Murray in straight sets 6-4 6-3 6-2. Wawrinka who's had a great tournament so far has now reached his maiden grand slam semi-final in over 30 appearances. And his first quarter-final win in 4 attempts. Murray the favorite after he won this year's Wimbledon was just not good enough on the night. Despite Wawrinka committing 7 more unforced errors, the swiss converted 30 more winners.
The final quarter-final was Novak Djokovic versus Mikhail Youzhney. Youzhney, who's famous for his head bashing incident 5 years ago in Miami and most recently for his racquet smashing incident at this year's Roland Garros created some great shots. Though, despite Djokovic making 15 more unforced errors, the Serbian was too good for Youzhney creating 32 winners to Youzhney's 15.
Djokovic will now face Wawrinka for spot in the finals. Meanwhile, Richard Gasquet will face Rafael Nadal. Can Gasquet repeat his feat when he was 13? Can Wawrinka upset Djokovic? Will Azarenka avenge her loss last year? We'll find out very soon.
That wraps my US Open review. I will be back after the Men's Semi-Finals. From me Agastya, thank you for reading my Sports News. Goodbye.
